Support a documentary film "Silent Fallout: Baby Teeth Speak"

WHAT IS THE "X YEARS AFTER EXPOSURE TO RADIATION III ~ SILENT FALLOUT: BABY TEETH SPEAK" ABOUT?

Director Hideo Ito's documentary is based on 19 years of original reporting.

This is about the issue of nuclear testing in Nevada, USA, about 70 years ago and interviews with people around this issue. Also it's focus on a doctor who searched this issue, Louise Reiss.

At the time, the residents who lived near the testing places were not aware that they had been exposed to radiation, and they are still suffering the effects today.

Director Hideo Ito has been reporting since 2004 in order to convey the fact of radioactive contamination caused by past nuclear tests, which is almost unknown in the United States. The second half of the film includes interviews with former military personnel who were involved in the Christmas Island nuclear tests in England and were exposed to radiation.

This film is a documentary about the radioactive contamination of the continental United States caused by the nuclear tests conducted in Nevada, U.S.A., but there is another story behind this film.

It is also a documentary about the activities of women who stood up to protect their children from radiation exposure. The "Baby Tooth Study" initiated by a group of American women, led by Doctor Louise Rice, influenced public opinion and even the president of the United States at the time, and led to the conclusion of the Partial Test Ban Treaty.

This research did not end in the past, and new studies are still being conducted today.

What we need now is to take action as them and that is what we can learn from this film.

The film also aims to eventually release this film throughout the U.S., and to raise the voices of citizens in the U.S. and around the world today to seriously consider how to handle nuclear weapons in the future and to move nations toward a nuclear-free world, just as the women of that time moved their country.

[ABOUT THE FILM]

In 1951, atmospheric nuclear tests began at the Nevada Test Site in the continental United States.

A total of 100 tests contaminated the continental United States with radiation. The people who attempted to demonstrate this fact were women.

"I want to protect the lives of children," they said. This film exposes the reality of "silent fallout," the invisible radioactive fallout that still lurks today, through the testimonies of 30 people facing radioactive contamination and documents from the time, as well as the historical fact that the women's thoughts and actions moved the nation.

This is the third in the "X Years After Radiation" series of films by former local TV station director and documentary filmmaker Hideo Ito, which focuses on the reality of radioactive contamination in the Americas, the "invisible radioactive fallout" that spread from the nuclear tests in Nevada, USA.

In his previous two films, he has focused on tuna fishermen who were exposed to radiation from the U.S. nuclear tests in the Pacific Ocean.

This time, he focuses on the radioactive contamination of the continental United States caused by the nuclear tests conducted in Nevada in the 1950s and 1960s.

This film focuses on the "Baby Tooth Survey" initiated by women to protect their children from radiation exposure.

Based on over 4,000 pages of documents and interviews conducted in the summer of 2022 with 30 people in the U.S. who were exposed to radiation and researchers, the film conveys the reality of the ongoing radiation contamination.

[Director's message].

It was in 2004 that I began covering incidents of radiation exposure from Pacific Ocean nuclear tests. I learned about the radioactive contamination of the Japanese archipelago and the continental United States through the classified documents of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the Japanese government. I was devastated by the reality that many people, including myself, did not know about, and at the same time, I witnessed the deaths of witnesses who died one after another.

Meanwhile, in Japan in 2022, the Great East Japan Earthquake caused an accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and the entire eastern part of the country was hit by strong radioactive contamination. Ten years have passed since then, and the world-shaking accident is now fading away. When we screened "X Years After Radiation" and "X Years After Radiation II" in the United States, we were surprised that the American people were completely unaware that the entire continental United States was contaminated by radiation in the process of developing nuclear weapons.

I must tell the story, and I must continue to tell it. With a deepening sense of mission, I visited the United Kingdom in 2020 to interview ex-servicemen who had been involved in nuclear tests and had been exposed to radiation. As I continued my interviews, I learned that many of them, who were young people around 20 years old, had died.

In addition, from June to August 2022, we will cover the contaminated continental United States.

Sixty years ago, it was women who tried to demonstrate the radioactive contamination of the continental United States caused by nuclear tests. Their desire to protect the lives of children and their actions moved President Kennedy. I hope that this film will be a reminder for the future of Japan, and that it will help the people of the U.S. learn the facts.

What we need now is to take action as them and that is what we can learn from this film.

[YOUR SOCIAL PROJECT: Our goal]

The U.S. nuclear tests occurred about 70 years ago. However, the effects of these tests are still continuing.

Looking at the current world situation, the nuclear issue has not yet been resolved.

In Japan, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the history, and now the nuclear power generation in Tohoku and elsewhere, are being questioned.

Looking at the current world situation, the nuclear issue has not yet been resolved.

In Japan, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the past, and now the nuclear power generation in Tohoku and elsewhere, are being questioned.

After all, when will we make peace a reality? When will we stop to destroy nature?

This film is not to promote rumors or fear. This film is not intended to accuse the U.S. of anything. There are countries other than the United States that have conducted nuclear tests. Other countries have also conducted nuclear tests and are still conducting nuclear tests today.

This film is to learn the facts and to think about how we can solve them for the good future.

We want many people to see this film. And we want to think about it together. That's why we have planned this screening and a social event for our guests.

We have a goal to show the film in the United States.

The director wants more people to think this issue and change the current nuclear situation. To do so, he believes that the role of U.S. is important and her action is needed, then the people in the U.S move more. This is the purpose of this film and event.

We hope this film will lead people to think about the future of Japan, and to let people in the U.S. know the facts and protect our beautiful earth.

Moreover, the research initiated by the American women led by Dr. Louise Rice did not end in the past; the spirit of the research continues today, and new studies are beginning to be conducted in the United States.

We believe that what we need now is action like these women, which will change the entire world better.

The director hopes that the film will eventually be shown throughout the U.S., and that citizens in the U.S. and around the world today will raise their voices and move their countries toward a nuclear-free world, just as the women of that time moved their country. However, it costs a lot of money to screen the film in the United States.
So, on the day of the screening, we will collect your support money to develop the film's release in the U.S., which is our ultimate goal.

Your participation will be one step toward changing the world.

Finally, "Oppenheimer" has been released in Japan, attracting a great deal of attention as a film about nuclear weapons. After the WWⅡ, the U.S. conducted as many as 100 nuclear tests in the atmosphere, resulting in serious contamination of the U.S. mainland. In addition, 67 hydrogen bomb tests were conducted in the waters of the South Pacific, and 992 Japanese tuna fishing boats were exposed to radiation.

We hope that this screening will provide an opportunity to share with everyone the significance of holding this event in Yokohama, where the port is located.

The venue, the Ship Theater, is a very special place on the sea, a place that is unique to the port of Yokohama. The purpose of the event is to let people enjoy the space through this screening. We hope you will also experience the mysterious charm and fun of the Ship Theatre.
